About Tima Gelatto

Twenty-seven years of a family notebook: what the season brought, what we made of it, what we learned.

We are the Timas, and this is our family's own writing. There are four of us in it now, and there was one of us when it started: my grandmother Elsa, who wrote the first notebook in 1999 in a kitchen with a stone sink, because she had decided that if a thing was worth cooking twice, it was worth writing down.

Everything here comes out of that notebook and out of the kitchen we still use. The recipes are home recipes, from an ordinary kitchen, with an ordinary freezer and no machines. If a dish has failed us, we write that down too, and if we have argued about it, we write that down as well, because that is usually the more useful part.

We write most weeks through the warm months, when there is fruit to write about, and we slow down in the deep of winter. A post is usually a season and a dish: rhubarb in April, the apricot tree in May, strawberries in June, melon in August, pears and chestnuts in September, and the pumpkin question every October. Some posts are only a note about the weather or a machine that broke.

Everything published here was written by us. The photographs are ours, the measurements are ours, and the mistakes are definitely ours.

If you would like to write to us, about a flavour you remember, a season that was short where you are, or a dish we have not tried yet, please write to [email protected] and we will read it. We answer slowly, but we answer. Elena is the one who usually does the typing, my mother Marta is the one who checks it, and I am the one who carries the ice cream.
